What utter rubbish. Sexual needs are so fundamental to the human condition that not writing about them would be sheer hypocrisy.
When I write about a character’s motivation in killing, readers expect to understand the factors that generated that motivation, and so why would I not describe the same motivational factors in the character’s sexual experience.
There are all sorts of studies about how frequently people consider sex, and they vary wildly, but one thing is certain; people think a lot about sex, and so why would an author not include this aspect of the human condition in his character development and motivations.
On the subject of the descriptive aspects: I like to think that I write sensitive, tasteful, and delicate descriptions of love and physical pleasure. To me ‘porn’ has connotations of vulgarity and crudeness and lack of taste, and so I find such comparisons offensive.
But then, as I said in the section on Aspiring Authors and dealing with criticism, The ‘review’ often tells us more about the ‘reviewer’ than the work under consideration, and so, perhaps the people who throw these accusations around like confetti need to ask themselves why they are happy to read descriptions of extreme violence and hatred, but feel so threatened by descriptions of love and physical pleasure.
